Mt Maunganui & Tauranga

If you feel like venturing out for a day, Mt Maunganui is a 1-hour drive from Orokawa Bay Villa . It can be seen in the distance from the Villa to your left. At night time you can see the lights in the distance, twinkling across the Tauranga Harbour. Mt Maunganui (The Mount), is located across the harbour from Tauranga. The Mount is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean with the beach on one side of the peninsula, and the sheltered waters of Pilot Bay on the other. The mountain itself, called Mt Maunganui or Mauao, the Maori name for this spectacular treasured iconic landmark is steeped in Maori history and mythology. It is an extinct volcano, and now a very popular walking track, with walks to the summit or around the base. The Mount also hosts one of the busiest ports in New Zealand and hosts several cruise ships each year. The once small town is a hive of activity in the Summer with boutique shops and many cafes, restaurants and bars. There are also the hot salt water pools at the foot of the Mount. It is a great day out and has the urban beach vibe, knowing you can head back to Orokawa bay Villa for the peace and tranquillity where you can look back down to the Mount and think about your day while relaxing in the Villa spa pool.
